NHS Monthly Meeting

Speaker: Dan Rubin

Topic: Creating the Year Round Garden.

Dan Rubin is a home gardener and seedsman who has been living in Pouch Cove for the past seventeen years.   During that time he has become deeply involved as a garden educator, garden and greenhouse designer and advisor to local gardeners and growers.    His own seaside garden, open to wild North Atlantic, has 25 raised beds and 27 fruit trees and bushes.   As well more standard crops, he grows grapes, peaches, corn and artichokes outdoors.   But his real focus has been perennials and self-seeding annuals well adapted to our challenging climate that promise a way for families and communities to rebuild food security, one garden at a time.  Dan has spearheaded a project to significantly expand what we can grow here by creating a greenhouse sheltered by the earth.   The Earth Sheltered Greenhouse Project, now in its third phase, and funded by Memorial University, will be building a demonstration version of this marriage of the greenhouse and the root cellar, at the O'Brien Farm on Mt. Scio, where it will be used to train new farmers.   Dan is also helping develop an online information hub for growers through a new organization called the Food Producers Forum.   On March 3rd he will be here to talk about his garden discoveries and projects, focused on improving food security in our province.
